Fondo de Vila Square

Fondo de Vila Square

The plateresque “cruceiro de Fondo de Vila is located in the square wich is at the southernmost end of the old town of Padrón.

The Calvary that has the same name as the square was donated by Juan Loreda in 15th century. Allegorical representations are represented in the “Calvary”: skulls, bones, salamanders and other animals. Moreover, we can see in the shaft the representation of St. John and the apostle Santiago. In the cross we can see, on one side, Jesus crucified and in the other side, the representation of the Descent.

It is worth stressing that this “Calvary” was commended by the author Alfonso Daniel Rodríguez Castelao, born in Rianxo, a linked place to Padrón.
